Sony PlayStation, a giant in the console gaming world for nearly three decades, is setting its sights on the booming mobile gaming market. In a strategic move to tap into the lucrative sector, the company has announced the creation of a new division, PlayStation Studios Mobile, and the acquisition of mobile games developer Savage Game Studios.
According to market analyst firm IDC and data.ai, mobile gaming is projected to generate $136 billion in revenue this year, accounting for more than half of the entire gaming market. As PlayStation 5 consoles remain challenging to find and increasingly expensive, Sony is keen on expanding its presence in the mobile gaming space to capitalize on this growth.
In a recent post on the company’s official blog, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst revealed the establishment of the PlayStation Studios Mobile Division. The new division will focus on developing mobile games using both new and existing PlayStation intellectual property. The acquisition of Savage Game Studios, a developer based in Helsinki and Berlin, is expected to support this new initiative. Although the studio has yet to release any games, it has been working on an unannounced “new AAA mobile live service action game.”
Sony’s push into mobile gaming comes amid a competitive landscape where rivals like Nintendo and Microsoft have already ventured. Nintendo has released mobile games such as Animal Crossing Pocket Camp and Mario Kart Tour, while Microsoft enables Xbox games to be played on mobile devices through Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming.
As PlayStation looks to maintain its edge in the gaming industry, the company aims to strike a balance between continuing its console gaming efforts and venturing into the mobile market. The creation of the PlayStation Studios Mobile Division signifies Sony’s commitment to diversifying its gaming offerings and reaching new audiences. While it remains to be seen what titles the new division will produce, this move is a clear indication of Sony’s intention to be a formidable player in the rapidly growing mobile gaming sector.
